Description

Celebrate Dad with this moist and decadent chocolate Father’s Day cake. Rich layers of chocolate sponge are stacked with creamy chocolate frosting and topped with a heartfelt message. It’s the perfect way to show your love and appreciation with every bite.

For the Chocolate Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

  • 2 large eggs, room temperature

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup hot water or hot coffee

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (more if needed)


Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  • Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  • Combine wet ingredients: Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.

  • Add hot liquid: Slowly stir in hot water (or coffee). Batter will be thin.

  • Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

  • Cool: Let the cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

  • Make frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix until combined. Add vanilla and cream. Beat until fluffy, adding more cream as needed.

  • Assemble: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting on top. Add the second layer and frost the top and sides.

 

  • Decorate: Optionally, pipe a message like “Happy Father’s Day” using icing or decorate with sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or fruit.

Notes

  • For a stronger chocolate flavor, use hot coffee instead of water.
  • Can be made a day in advance and stored covered at room temperature.
