Ingredients
For the Chocolate Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup buttermilk, room temperature

For the Chocolate Frosting:

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 tsp salt

2 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup heavy cream (more if needed)
Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Combine wet ingredients: Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.

Add hot liquid: Slowly stir in hot water (or coffee). Batter will be thin.

Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Cool: Let the cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Make frosting: Beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix until combined. Add vanilla and cream. Beat until fluffy, adding more cream as needed.

Assemble: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting on top. Add the second layer and frost the top and sides.

Decorate: Optionally, pipe a message like “Happy Father’s Day” using icing or decorate with sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or fruit.
